Everglades, Florida  (Select Photo to Enlarge)

May 2005, and Capt. Nick Sassic, owner of

Fly Envy Fishing Charters trailers his canoe

for a fly fishing trip into the Everglades.

It is 6:30 am, and we are a mile into the 'glades

as the sun starts to dawn, but believe me, the

mosquitoes were wide awake to greet us at the put-in.

Capt. Nick guides the canoe into a narrow Mangrove

tunnel, and there are fish scurrying everywhere to

get out of our way, as we glide silently into the maze...

...but at the other end of the tunnel it opens back up

to reveal another shallow lake. Brushing off a coating of

mosquitoes, it's time to stand up and start casting.

The Mangroves line the shore, with a million places

for Snook, Redfish, and Tarpon to hide out,

and there are wakes and swirls from fish everywhere.

Larger pockets like this, with shadows for cover,

are prime spots to find Snook lurking in ambush

for some unsuspecting bait fish or other prey.

Here's an 8 pound Snook, taken from under a Mangrove

branch on a topwater Bunny Streamer. They don't "hit"

the fly, they attack it at full speed!.

The Snook is an ambushing, eating, machine

that will make you want to fish for nothing

else the rest of your trip. Try it, you'll like it.

Here's a Black Drum taken on a fast sinking fly,

that has to be placed within a very short range of

the Drum's mouth, or they won't take it.

"Mr. Rubber Lips" up close, and you can see the chin

barbels on the bottom of the jaw line that help the

Black Drum locate food on the bottom, and the tough

rubber-like lips. These guys require accurate casting.
